Blog   Spoil Dad In The Shire

Spoil Dad in the shire

Father’s Day is the perfect time to let our dads know we really appreciate all they do for us. And while some dads may be in desperate need of new socks and undies, there are plenty of fun ways to spoil your dad in the Sutherland Shire this year. Local blogger Fiona Dewhurst has these ideas.

1. Bushwalking or cycling in the Royal National Park

With the Royal National Park located in the Shire, bushwalking is a fun and fabulous way to enjoy dad’s special day. The park has so many great tracks for different skill levels. As our family is still young, the Lady Carrington Drive walk starting at the Willow Tree Picnic area provides a pretty but easy path to toddle along as far as you like then head back to enjoy some lunch or afternoon tea at the Audley Dancehall & Cafe while watching people and ducks paddle by. For the more adventurous or older family, you can ride your bikes along this 10 kilometre track (one way). Entry to the Royal National Park is $12 per day per vehicle.

2. Fishing

Teaching your children to fish is almost a rite of passage in many families. Father’s Day is the perfect day to hand down this skill to the next generation and the Shire has so many great spots to do it. Check out Gunnamatta Park in Cronulla, below the Audley Weir in the Royal National Park or off the wharf at Como Pleasure Grounds. These are all great for the family with picnic areas nearby for when the kids are ready to run around. Along with the essential fishing licenses, remember to take all the equipment you need like pliers and gloves or you too will have memories of dad being “speared” by the fish you caught just like my preschooler! Check out this page for more information about fishing in the Shire.

3. Breakfast or lunch cruise on the Port Hacking River

What better way to spend Father’s Day morning or afternoon than cruising around the Port Hacking River on the T.S.M.V. Gunnamatta. Not only can you enjoy the beautiful weather and picturesque scenery but the crew are very knowledgeable about the local area. You also can get a peek at some of the fabulous waterfront properties of the area. Perhaps best of all, the cruise includes a gourmet meal and a drink. Sounds like the perfect way to sit back, relax and enjoy the day with dad! Cruises start from $65 per person. Bookings are essential. Click here for more details.

4. Cronulla Stand Up Paddle Boarding

Sometimes experiences make the perfect gift for dads – especially when they might already have so much stuff. Cronulla Stand Up Paddle Boarding sell gift certificates that will make your dad smile! My husband has attended a class with the guys at Cronulla and enjoyed learning a new skill while spending some relaxing time in the pristine waters of Gunnamatta Bay. Alternatively, book the whole tribe in and make it a fun family activity! Classes start from $60 for one person. Check out Cronulla Stand Up Paddle Boarding for more details of times and locations.

5. Father’s Day breakfast or lunch in the Shire

They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. Celebrate dad’s day by taking him out to breakfast or lunch – and best of all there will be no washing up for mum at the end. Sutherland Shire is full of great cafes and pubs which provide fantastic food and atmosphere. One of our family favourites is Revolution at Como where friendly staff serve delicious food and coffee while playing vinyl records. Try the egg and bacon roll and you won’t be disappointed!

Other options great for the family include enjoying the art, sunshine and gardens at the Hazelhurst Cafe or the fresh taste of Mejico at Westfield Miranda who are including a complementary beer for Dad when pre-booking. And perhaps while in the shopping mecca of Westfield Miranda you can duck into a department store and grab some socks and undies for dad after all!
