Woronora Bridge Walk Hero

Woronora River Bridge Walk

Suspended beneath the northern rim of the Woronora River Bridge, this stunning walkway and cycleway offers fabulous unobstructed views along the Woronora River and to the bushland and water below.

Completed in 2001, the bridge is a beautiful structure of pressed concrete, steel and wood, curving for more than half a kilometre above the Woronora River from the top of the valley at Sutherland across the water to Bangor.

If you’re driving, park at the end of Oakwood Street, Sutherland, and follow the road down over the small creek to the pathway at the top of River Road. This pathway will take you all the way to the other side of the bridge at Bangor, and you can join it from many points at the top of River Road, at Menai Road in Bangor, or by walking up the stairs from either side of the Woronora River.

Follow the footpath alongside the road past leafy trees and native flowers on your left half-hidden views downriver. The architecture of the bridge is introduced here with open grates along the footpath that you can stand on to view the shrubs and foliage below. You will pass the pipeline path to your left and stairs down the side of the valley to Woronora. When the footpath dips underneath the bridge and takes you to the northern side you’ve arrived at the Woronora River Bridge walkway.

The elegant wooden pathway curves out across the river in a natural arc, its concrete side, steel supports and metal grates creating shapes and shadows in the light. There is lots of open space for stunning views out across the bushland and upriver past Bonnet Bay.

As you walk across the bridge stop at the lookout in the middle for an uninterrupted view – and a great photo op – north along the river. Continue walking and you will arrive on the Bangor side of the bridge at the top of the Woronora bends after another few minutes minutes depending on your pace.

From here you can turn around and retrace your steps, or you can follow the stairs to the left and walk down the Woronora bends footpath, crossing the old Woronora Bridge at the bottom and taking the stairs back up the other side.

This is a beautiful walk or cycle for all ages and fitness levels and is accessible for wheelchairs and scooters.
